Hillandale (Main Residence and Gatehouse)
Built between 1922 and 1925, Hillandale stands as a reminder of an era of great interest in period houses.

This expansive villa was built for Anne Archbold, one of DC's most prominent social figures during her day and the donor of much of the land that now constitutes Glover-Archbold Park. The picturesque, irregular composition of Hillandale was closely modeled on photographs of Italian villas and farmhouses, following the popular custom of the day to emulate period structures in the construction of new residences. The house, with its rustic stucco facades and terra cotta tile roofs, balconies, and loggias, was once situated on an extensive estate. Its interior includes ornate frescoes and a vaulted music room.
Hillandale is the only known work in DC of noted Boston architect Josephine Wright Chapman. It was built between 1922 and 1925.
