Central Heating Plant
The Art Deco-style Central Heating Plant once served as the main heating facility for all federal buildings in DC.
Text
Nationally renowned architect Paul Philippe Cret designed the Central Heating Plant building in the Art Deco Style under the direction of the Office of the Supervising Architect of the Treasury. Though the building has been subject to numerous equipment upgrades over the past 70 years, it retains much of its original interior and exterior configuration, material, and uses.
The main building is a six-story monolithic steel and masonry structure that consists of two rectangular masses—the 1933-1934 original building and a 1957 refrigeration plant addition. The Central Heating Plant served as the main heating plant for all federal buildings in Washington, DC and served 22 buildings in the 1930s.
